Craft Group
Tekera Craft Group started
with a few local women who live in Tekera/Lwega and enjoyed making
traditional crafts. Now over 50 local women are involved in the Group.
Members come to make crafts at the Centre every Thursday and then the
crafts are sold in Masaka. It is also a social gathering and outing for
the ladies to sit and gossip. Brigitte has worked hard to develop a market
for the crafts and has found some outlets in Masaka and at an equator
merchant.
Each craftswoman receives 50% of the sale price of the item sold, and
the other 50% is used by the group to buy materials and equipment. This
involves each item made being tagged by the woman who makes it - giving
her name, group number and the price. The tags are then removed when the
item is sold and returned to the Centre where the payments are organized
and signed for by the group members.
Recently the members held elections to formalize the structure of the
group. The elected group President is Annet Nabawanuka. She is assisted
by Brigitte Daley, Treasurer, and Aida Nafuka, Record-keeper.
In 2009, the group began a
small lending programme, using profits they earned. Loans of up to
50,000 UGX ($30) are granted by committee members to help those with
small business plans. Repayment includes interest of 10% and loans must
be paid on time. It has been very successful and a great benefit to
members.
The aim of the Group is: To work together on our crafts, improve our
skills and make money for our members.
